Concerns Over Illegal Gambling During Grand National
During the recent Grand National, it is estimated that up to £40 million could have been wagered with illegal operators. The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) reported that the overall amount potentially staked with these operators during the Aintree Festival reached £100 million.
The Grand National is a significant event in the sports betting calendar, drawing millions of bettors and generating substantial wagers annually. However, the BGC has highlighted the risks posed by illegal gambling operators who exploit major events without providing necessary consumer protections.
Challenges for Regulated Operators
The BGC expressed concerns that increasing operational costs for licensed operators, along with the implementation of more rigorous checks that require customers to share personal financial information, may push some bettors towards the unregulated market.
Grainne Hurst, Chief Executive of the Betting and Gaming Council, noted the Grand National's importance and its enjoyment by millions in a safe manner. She cautioned about the activities of the illegal gambling market that lacks necessary safeguards. The BGC emphasized the need to keep bettors within the regulated market, where consumer protections are assured.
Impact of the Regulated Sector
The regulated betting and gaming sector supports over 109,000 jobs, contributes £6.8 billion to the UK economy, and generates £4 billion in tax each year, alongside providing essential funding for British horseracing.
The BGC reiterated the importance of addressing the criminal organizations that operate illegal gambling sites to safeguard consumers and bolster the regulated sector.
